Rena Newell was appointed by Chief Pos Bassett as the Sipayik representative to the Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission on June 26, 2024.

Newell is a distinguished leader and advocate within the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Sipayik, known for her deep commitment to her community and her extensive contributions to tribal governance and education. She has held several influential positions, including serving as the Chief of the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Sipayik and as the Passamaquoddy Tribal Representative to the Maine Legislature.

During her tenure as Tribal Representative, Newell was instrumental in advancing legislation that secured access to clean drinking water for the Passamaquoddy at Sipayik, a critical achievement that underscored her dedication to the well-being of her people.

In addition to her political accomplishments, Newell has devoted much of her career to the field of education. She served as the Passamaquoddy Tribal Education Director, where she worked tirelessly to support and empower Passamaquoddy students and others in achieving their academic goals.

Newell's commitment to education is also reflected in her personal achievements. In May 2024, she graduated from the University of Maine at Machias with a Bachelor's Degree in College Studies, concentrating in business and public administration management.
