MITSC's Role in Advancing Wabanaki Nations' Revenue Development

The Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission (MITSC) is committed to fostering economic opportunities and revenue growth for the Wabanaki Nations. Through strategic monitoring, research, and collaboration, MITSC ensures that tribal communities can thrive in Maine’s evolving economic landscape.

Key initiatives include:
  • Monitoring the implementation of tribal online sports betting to ensure fairness and success while recommending operational improvements as needed.
  • Facilitating direct tribal access to federal block grant funding to support economic and community development initiatives.
  • Following the progression of key legislation that impacts tribal goals and self-determination efforts.
  • Conducting in-depth research on the 151 federal laws enacted since the 1980 Settlement Act that benefit tribes and tribal citizens, assessing their impact on Maine laws applicable to tribal lands.
  • Bringing together Wabanaki leaders and entrepreneurs to share successes, identify barriers to doing business in Maine, and craft strategies for future business growth.

MITSC's efforts focus on empowering tribal communities with tools, insights, and resources to foster sustainable economic development. By collaborating with stakeholders and addressing structural challenges, MITSC plays a vital role in strengthening the Wabanaki Nations’ economic independence and prosperity.
