Fostering Understanding: MITSC's Role in Education & Outreach

The Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission (MITSC) is dedicated to empowering future generations through education and outreach, fostering a deeper understanding of Wabanaki history, culture, and rights. By providing resources and supporting critical laws, MITSC strengthens knowledge and collaboration across communities.

Key initiatives include:
  • Maintaining and expanding an extensive online library of documents related to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act.
  • Publishing Tributaries, a platform for narrative journalism focused on Wabanaki peoples, their history, and contemporary concerns.
  • Supporting the implementation of the Wabanaki Studies Law of 2001, ensuring students learn about the rich history and contributions of Wabanaki Nations.
  • Promoting the enactment and implementation of the Wabanaki Studies Bill (LD 291) to enhance educational curricula.
  • Collaborating to educate and ensure compliance with the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) and the newly established Maine Indian Child Welfare Act.
  • Strengthening MITSC’s role as a leading research, education, and resource hub for information on tribal-state relations and the Settlement Act.

Through these efforts, MITSC equips communities with the knowledge to build stronger, more informed partnerships, ensuring that the Wabanaki heritage is preserved and respected for generations to come.
