United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People

United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (often referred to as UNDRIP) was adopted by the United Nations on September 13th, 2007. The Declaration is a comprehensive statement addressing the human rights of indigenous peoples. In 2008 The Maine Legislature issued a non-binding Joint Resolution expressing support for UNDRIP. In 2010 the United States government announced its conditional support for UNDRIP. MITSC has encouraged the State to incorporate the principles of UNDRIP into its relations with the Wabanaki Tribes. MITSC has also studied and reported on how the Settlement structure compares to Indigenous rights under UNDRIP.
