The Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission was created as part of the 1980 Settlement legislation. The composition and responsibilities of MITSC are described in section 6212 of the Maine Implementing Act.
MITSC has amended its By-Laws on several occasions as needed to address evolving circumstances and concerns.
MITSC pursues issues, priorities, and projects as identified in Work Plans that are approved by the Commissioners.
MITSC creates periodic written reports on its activities. Over the years they have been titled in various ways. Collectively these reports provide a fairly comprehensive history of MITSC activities since 1999.
The MITSC Commissioners have meetings several times each year at various locations in Maine, including the tribal communities. Meetings are open to the public in-person and through an audio live stream.
